POLICY

FOOD LOSS AND WASTE POLICY

1. Our commitment

The food and beverage industry in Europe participates in a joint declaration on food waste, Every Crumb Counts, committing to preventing the loss of edible food (including edible packaging), promoting a life-cycle approach to reducing food waste, and proactively contributing to European, national and global solutions and initiatives in this area. In addition, the goal is to raise awareness of the importance of reducing food loss within their operations and along the entire value chain. Finally, signatories commit to working with all stakeholder groups and contributing to the development and dissemination of best practices.
Coca-Cola HBC supports all relevant aspects of this statement, which directly contribute to our goal of zero waste to landfill.

2. Causes of food loss and waste, our holistic approach along the value chain

We apply a holistic approach to address the loss and waste of our beverages and the ingredients we use, caused by quality non-compliance, spills, breakages or over-shelf storage. To this end, we focus on all steps in our value chain, measuring food loss and waste in ingredients, production processes, warehouses and distribution, or at the customer level. We also analyze the potential for food loss by type and category.

3. Actions to prevent food loss and waste

Through operational excellence, we are committed to preventing food loss and waste or redirecting nutrients to industrial use. Only when this is not possible, we recover the lost and wasted parts for composting or conversion into energy. This approach ensures that only a residual mass is eventually disposed of.

We work with a wide range of stakeholders to implement actions to prevent food loss and waste, including:

  • Train employees to prevent food loss and waste and optimize production.
  • To work with raw material suppliers to ensure the application of our Sustainable Agriculture Principles and Supplier Guidelines, ensuring that raw materials meet commercial, regulatory, safety and quality standards.
  • Work with supply chain partners to improve storage and transportation.
  • Provide storage instructions and freshness rules to customers, as well as indications on expiration dates to consumers.
  • Offering different portion sizes of our products to meet the needs of consumers.
  • Collaborate with clients, NGOs, and partners using alternative channels, such as food banks or markets, to redirect food and feed people.
  • Engage customers in sharing identified best practices, pilot Zero Waste schemes, and communicate the results and benefits to the wider community.
  • Work with corporate partners, regulators, academia, NGOs, and communities to identify and implement innovative solutions that help prevent food loss and waste.

4. Reporting

As an integral part of our internal management reporting routines, we monitor progress related to food loss and food waste across all relevant dimensions of the value chain (as described in section 2). To promote all necessary corrective actions, i.e. prevent and minimize food loss and waste, we apply the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle. The aggregate results are discussed in the Social Responsibility Committee. In addition, we report on our actions and progress in the company's annual report.
