OUR COMMITMENT TO PACKAGING

Our commitment to packaging

Integrating sustainability into every aspect of the business is our priority and the commitment on which our investments are focused. We work at all stages of the production chain to reduce our environmental impact and achieve increasingly important goals in terms of sustainability and circular economy to concretely face the challenge of the ecological transition.

In Italy, our entire product portfolio is fully recyclable and our entire beverage portfolio is made of 100 per cent recycled plastic (rPET) with the exception of the cap and label. With tethered cap, we have made the cap and bottle of our products inseparable to facilitate collection and recycling.

We have committed to collect and recycle as much packaging as we will sell by 2030.

We work together with non-governmental organisations and supply chain consortia for a waste-free world.

rPET

The rPET, from which our bottles are made, is recycled PET (polyethylene terephthalate) one of the plastics for food  packaging that does not lose its basic properties during recycling and therefore reduces the need to produce additional virgin plastic material.

The use of rPET is therefore a part of our sustainability strategy, in which we have invested over 100 million euros in Italy in the last 10 years alone and in which we will continue to invest.

Gaglianico Plant Gaglianico Plant

Our factory in Gaglianico produces rPET preforms

It is a state-of-the-art plant for the processing of recycled plastics, capable of transforming up to 30,000 tons of PET per year into new 100% recycled PET (rPET) preforms intended to cover the bottling needs of the company's beverages in Italy.

rPET bottles can have variable colors

Bottles obtained with the use of rPET preforms may have colors that differ from the normal transparency that is usually observed with the use of virgin PET preforms. This deviation of color from the transparency of the bottle does not affect in any way the quality and safety of the product contained in them.

OUR ACHIEVEMENTS

We are committed to the constant reduction of primary packaging: our continuous investments in terms of Research & Development have allowed us, in fact, to reduce the use of PET by 20%, plastic in caps by 27%, glass by 28% and aluminum by 18% in recent years.  In our factories we use 100% recycled PET (rPET) bottles, excluding cap and label, for all our soft drinks.

ALUMINIUM

We have eliminated the iconic orange color from Fanta Original bottles and green from Sprite bottles, so that they can be more easily recycled into new bottles in line with our goals of making packaging increasingly sustainable from a circular economy perspective.

Finally, less than a year after the introduction of tethered caps on FuzeTea, in 2023 we have extended caps attached to bottles to all brands in the portfolio, with the aim of simplifying collection, recycling and reducing the dispersion and impact of plastic on the environment.

In addition to the primary packaging, we also work to reduce secondary packaging, that which is not in direct contact with the product: an example of this is the reduction in the size of the labels on our Amita fruit juices and FuzeTea iced teas and the adoption of KeelClip™ technology, an innovative packaging system, made of FSC paper from a responsible supply chain and 100% recyclable, which has allowed us to completely eliminate plastic wrapping from multipacks of cans, reducing CO2 emissions and saving tons of unnecessary plastic per year.

WHY PET?

PET preforms, which once blown will become bottles, are easier to transport, weigh less, and take up less space than an already complete bottle in another material.

DURABLE AND SAFE

  • Hygienic, unalterable and not subject to corrosion
  • Shatterproof and waterproof
  • Resistant to microorganisms and biodegradation
  • Insulator and sealant

100% RECYCLABLE

It can be recycled countless times while maintaining the original PET characteristics.

With the Bottle to Bottle process, which allows each bottle to be transformed into a new recycled plastic bottle, the need to produce virgin material is eliminated.

LOW CO2 EMISSIONS

In its recycled version, rPET, the CO2/kg values are among the lowest ever compared to other materials.

VERSATILE

Depending on the processing, it can become soft, bendable, extremely rigid, light or resistant during the recycling phases.

Each pack plays its own role within our range, but all of them are already 100% recyclable.
Plastic packs allow you to avoid wasting more than 50% of food*.
