Coca-Cola HBC named Europe's most sustainable beverage company again

Zug, 16 September 2019 – The 2019 Dow Jones Sustainability Index – the global benchmark for sustainability in business – has rated Coca-Cola HBC the most sustainable beverage company in Europe. This is the sixth time in seven years that the company has been ranked first in the index and the ninth consecutive year that it has been in the top three among global and European beverage companies.

Top scores in 11 categories and significant improvements in 9 others contributed to an overall score of 90, which placed the company second in the global ranking.

 Coca-Cola HBC CEO Zoran Bogdnovic commented : "We are honored and proud that the commitment of our employees and partners to sustainable practices has led to this recognition. We are aware that this is just a snapshot of our business and that in reality, the work never stops and there is always something more to do. That is why we are focused on consistently achieving our long-term sustainability goals."

2018 sustainability results that contributed to our score

  • We achieved our science-based commitment to reduce carbon emissions in our value chain by 25% (compared to 2010), two years ahead of our target 2020. In other words, we saved 1.27 million tons of carbon emissions;
  • We achieved an employee engagement level of 88%, above the average of FTSE 100 companies;
  • 37% of managerial roles are held by women and our goal is to reach 50% by 2025;
  • 98% of 3,327 million euros was directed to local suppliers;
  • We have invested 7.9 million euros in projects for communities;
  • We have reduced the amount of water used in our production processes by 22%;
  • We have recovered 45% of the primary packaging that we have placed on the market to recycle it.

This result is also the result of our work, which we strive every day to ensure the sustainability of our business.

In 2018, in Italy:

  • 79% of the total energy used comes from renewable and clean sources;
  • Compared to the 2010 value, greenhouse gas emissions per litre of beverages produced have been reduced by about 38%;
  • We have reduced the weight of PET bottles by 14% compared to 2010;
  • We have optimized secondary packaging, reducing its weight by more than 50% over the years to date;
  • In 2019 alone, we donated 116 tons of drinks to Banco Alimentare.
